Summary Description:
The Home Health Coder is responsible for accurate ICD-10-CM coding of home health episodes, including OASIS assessments and Plans of Care (POC), in compliance with CMS guidelines. The role also includes auditing coder charts, providing actionable feedback, and supporting quality improvement across the coding team.

Daily Responsibilities:
  • Audit high-complexity charts that may have multiple comorbidities
  • Lead coding audits and quality reviews with offshore auditors and the client
  • Mentor and coach offshore coders and auditors across levels
  • Support external audits and client escalations
  • Act as SME for CMS updates and PDGM changes
  • Conduct retrospective and concurrent audits of coder charts
  • Identify error trends including primary diagnosis selection, sequencing, and etiology/manifestation
  • Participate in QA calibrations and guideline updates
  • Support remediation plans
Skills and Education:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Coding certification through AAPC or AHIMA
  • 5+ years of home health coding experience
  • 2+ years of medical coding auditing or chart review experience preferred
  • BCHH-C (Board Certified Home Health-Coding) or COQS (Certified OASIS Quality Specialist) preferred
    • Required after hire
  • Ability to work under limited supervision with ability to understand and meet deadlines as workload necessitates
  • Advanced knowledge in ICD-10-CM home health coding, CMS regulations, OASIS, and POC
  • Ability to meet department productivity standards
  • Demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload
  • Excellent typing and 10-key speed and accuracy
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and strong organizational skills
